Babi Bw is a family brand, born out of a love for Wales and the rich heritage and stories that the country is made up of.

Our designs are inspired and pay tribute to the iconic emblems of Wales, but not everyone is quite as familiar with the myths as we are. We want to give you and your little ones a glimpse into the story of our beautiful Welsh dragon and why it holds such a strong place in people’s hearts and why we picked it as a showstopper for our collection.

Long ago a king named King Vortiger journeyed deep into the mountains to find a safe place for his people to call home, or so the legend goes. His lands had been set upon and forced into war with loss of his people at the hands of the heartless invaders. It was his dearest hope to make sure this never happened again. After weeks of searching the king and his men came across a place so perfect that King Vortiger drew his sword there and then, plunged it into the ground and proclaimed that this would be where he built his castle, the heart of his new kingdom. This place would come to be known as Dinas Emrys and is a site of much tourist and historical interest to this day.

The king ordered his men to dig foundations and start to build the castle walls. All day they toiled and by nightfall had built up the first of the walls. However, when the men awoke from their slumber, in the morning, the walls of the castle had fallen, and the foundations were in ruin. The king was furious and ordered the men to start again, taking care with their work and to make sure the walls could withstand any attacks. The men set to work once more, digging and building and again went to bed pleased with the walls that they had built. Yet at dawn when the men awoke the walls were ruined once more. It was then that a young boy wandered into the camp and sought an audience with the King, saying that he knew why this was happening. At first the King was distrustful but agreed to speak with the boy. The young man told the king a story of two dragons, one white and one red. This place was the home of the red dragon, but it had been invaded by the white. Their warring had disturbed the land and they had been trapped beneath the hill at the side of a mystical lake for hundreds of years and until they were freed and able to complete their battle there would be no hope of building anything on this land.

The king believed the boy, who some say was a young Merlin, and ordered his men to dig beneath the mountain to free the dragons, with the hope that the red dragon could regain his home. Just as the boy had promised, the men’s digging revealed the cave and lake with both dragons. Once freed the dragon’s fight resumed, and although the red dragon was smaller, he was brave of heart and fought with spirit, defeating the white dragon and reclaimed his home.

The Red Dragon was strong, brave, fierce but also benevolent and agreed to the King’s request to build a castle on top of his cave. In turn the king trusted the dragon to guard the kingdom’s gold and treasure in the cave beneath living together in harmony.
